A point-of-sale (POS) system is the screen your cashiers use all day, so a poor choice slows every sale. Before you buy, work through these questions.
1. What do you sell, and how many items?
A shop with a few hundred items needs fast search and barcode scanning. A restaurant needs tables, orders and kitchen printing. Tell your supplier exactly how you trade.
2. Which payment methods do your customers use?
In Kenya most shops need cash and M-PESA at the minimum. Check that payments are recorded properly so the end-of-day totals match.
3. Does it track stock?
Stock should reduce automatically with every sale, and you should be able to see what is running low.
4. What happens when the internet is down?
Ask whether the system keeps working offline and syncs later.
5. Who will train your staff and support you?
Good software still fails if cashiers are not trained. Choose a supplier who sets up your products, trains your team and is easy to reach afterwards.
